Understanding Prakruti and Vikruti in Ayurveda

Understanding Prakruti and Vikruti in Ayurveda

Posted on March 7, 2026March 7, 2026 by r983479@gmail.com

In Ayurveda, each individual is considered unique — no two people share the exact same internal composition. This distinct balance of energies or doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) that we are born with is known as our Prakruti, or natural constitution. Just like fingerprints, this constitution never changes throughout life. It defines our physical structure, emotional tendencies, and overall personality.

However, as we go through different phases of life, our environment, diet, emotions, and lifestyle can disturb this natural balance. The state of imbalance that occurs as a result is called Vikruti. It reflects how our body and mind have shifted from their original harmony, often showing up as physical or emotional discomfort.

Prakruti — Your Natural State of Balance

The Sanskrit word Prakruti literally means “nature.” It represents the original state of equilibrium within us — the perfect combination of the five elements (Air, Ether, Fire, Water, and Earth) that shape our body and mind. Understanding your Prakruti helps you know what keeps you balanced, what causes stress or illness, and what kind of food, exercise, and lifestyle support your health best.

Vikruti — When the Balance Shifts

Vikruti refers to a temporary or long-term disturbance in our natural state. It is what happens when one or more doshas become aggravated or weakened due to external factors like poor diet, stress, irregular sleep, or seasonal changes. In Ayurveda, recognizing Vikruti is key to healing because it helps identify what needs to be corrected to return to your true nature.

The Importance of Balance

Both Prakruti and Vikruti play vital roles in Ayurveda. By understanding your natural constitution (Prakruti) and observing your current imbalances (Vikruti), you can make mindful choices — from diet and routine to herbal therapies and meditation — to restore harmony.

Ayurveda teaches that true health isn’t just the absence of disease, but a continuous effort to stay in sync with your inner nature and the rhythms of the universe.
